QED comes from the initials of the Latin phrase 'Quod Erat Demonstrandum' which translates as 'that which has been proven'.

Familiar to philosophers and physicists it was often written after a mathematical proof. Plus anyone who watched alot of English telly in the 1980's might remember a BBC science program called QED !

It's a nod to the importance of evidence, reason and the scientific method.
